Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, FGA

Richard Frimpong Oppong is a Professor of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. He was called to the Ghana Bar in 2003 and currently practices as a consultant with Cardinal Law Group.
Professor Oppong has advised Ghanaian and foreign law firms such as Rechtsanwälte Bub, Gauweiler
& Partner, Munich, Germany; Jones Day, London; Crowell & Moring,
Washington DC; Covington & Burling LLP, Washington DC; Rankin and Bond,
Vancouver; SPA Ajibade & Co, Lagos; Owusu-Dapaa Law & Associates,
Ghana; Cardinal Law Group, Ghana; and Addleshaw Goddard LLP, London on many
international transactions and arbitration proceedings. He has advised or acted
as counsel on international and domestic arbitration proceedings before the ICC
Court of Arbitration, London Court of International Arbitration, the Singapore
International Arbitration Centre, and the Ghana Arbitration Centre. He was a
member of the Working Group of The Hague Conference on Private International
Law that developed The Hague Principles on Choice of Law in International

In addition to his
legal consultancy work, Professor Oppong has taught at and worked for academic
institutions in the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia,
Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda. He has published four books,
three co-edited books, and over 50 articles, book chapters and book reviews.
Two of his books have been translated into Chinese. His world-class scholarship
have been variously described by independent reviewers as “tackl[ing] a major
problem of long-term interest”; “offer[ing] innovative insights”; “a remarkable
tour de force”; “ambitious and methodologically executed”; “clear and
authoritative”; “instructive, illuminating, lucid, thoroughly researched”;
“clear, accessible, informed and informative”; and as of “practical value” and
of “exceptional quality”. Two of publications have won international awards,
namely the 2013 American Society of International Law prize in Private
International Law and the 2014 James Crawford Prize of the Journal of
International Dispute Settlement. In 2011, he was nominated for the prestigious
Hessel Yntema Prize of the American Journal of Comparative Law. He is frequently
cited in academic publications and has been cited in judicial decisions.
Professor Oppong is an
elected Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. In
2017, he was selected as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New
Scholars, Artists and Scientists. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the
highly regarded Yearbook of Private International Law and the Journal of
Private International Law.
