Richard Frimpong Oppong is a Professor of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. He was called to the Ghana Bar in 2003.

In July 2024, Professor Oppong was nominated to become a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. He has acted as arbitrator, consultant or counsel in several international and domestic arbitration proceedings. He has advised Ghanaian and foreign law firms on many international business transactions and arbitration proceedings.

Professor Oppong has taught at and worked for academic institutions in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda.

Professor Oppong has published eight books, over 50 articles, book chapters, and reviews. His publications include Conflict of Laws in Ghana (2021); The Government of Ghana and International Arbitration (2017); His writings have been translated into French and Chinese, and some have won international writing prizes. He is frequently cited in academic publications and has been cited in judicial decisions. In 2022, he delivered the JB Danquah Memorial Lectures on Digitalisation and the Future of the Ghana Legal System.

Professor Oppong completed his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia and Post-doctoral studies at the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, both in Canada. He holds a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School, a first-class Master of Laws degree in Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge, and a first-class Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ghana. He is the recipient of the 2003 John Mensah Sarbah Prize from the Ghana School of Law.
